Questions about wood floors
Should I choose unfinished or prefinished hardwood?
Both have advantages. If you're matching an existing hardwood floor, unfinished wood can be stained to match, but it's finished on site, which means more noise, dust and time before you can use the room. Prefinished floors arrive already finished, so the room doesn't have to be shut down for finishing.
Red oak or white oak?
Partly it's taste. Some people prefer the pinkish cast of red oak, others the golden hue of white oak. Traffic matters too. Red oak works well in many rooms, but white oak holds up better against heel marks, so it can be the better choice for foyers and rooms used for entertaining.
Will my floor have color variations?
Yes. Hardwood is a natural product, so expect color variation in every grade. Lower grades also show more character, such as knots, mineral streaks and pinholes.
How many times can a solid wood floor be sanded?
Refinishing to change the color or fix a problem finish typically removes 1/64 inch of wood or less. Floors that have been gouged, badly scratched or left uneven may need more removed, and replacing the worst boards can be better than over-sanding the good ones next to them. Under normal conditions, a ¾" flooring product is considered a lifetime product.
How do I acclimate new hardwood?
Open the boxes and lay them flat in the room where the floor will be installed for 3 to 5 days. In areas with high humidity, you may need a humidifier or dehumidifier.
What should I use to bring back the shine?
Your safest bet is a cleaner made by a hardwood flooring or floor finish manufacturer, such as Bona Kemi or Bruce.
